BKU lashes out at UPA govt for ''anti-farmer'' policy

Ambala, Sep 6 (UNI) Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leaders from the northern Indian states today lashed out at the UPA government for ''giving a raw deal to the cash-strapped farmers''.

Farmer leaders from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi were speaking at a state-level BKU rally held under the chairmanship of the Union general secretary Rakesh Takait at the grain market Ambala City today.

They alleged that the Centre had failed to give relief to farmers who were groaning under the burden of loans both from banks and private money lenders and were compelled to commit suicides.

Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, President Punjab BKU, Sukhdev Singh Gill Himachal Pradesh President, Gurnam Singh Haryana, National general secretary Yudhvir Singh and Rakesh Takait assailed the government for anti-farmer policies which they alleged had ruined the rural economy based on farming.

They also submitted a memorandum of demands addressed to the President and to City Magistrate Susil Kumar.

The demands included remission of loans from farmers and labourers, Increase in the rate of labour from 1966 as the base year, grant of loans at four percent interest, free medical aid at par with government employees, introduction fo crop insurance, free power and water supply at the pattern of Punjab, minimum support price of paddy should be at Rs 1100 per qtl and payment of arrears with interest to the sugarcane growers.
