Armed miscreants loot Rs 5 lakh from bank, injure one

Chandarnagore, Sep 6(UNI) Armed miscreants looted more than Rs. five lakh and injured an employee in a daring robbery in the branch of a nationalised bank here today.

Hooghly district Superintendent of Police Rajeev Mishra said an armed gang of eight youths, who came on motorbikes, entered the local branch of UCO Bank posing as customers.

The miscreants took by surprise the employees and a few customers present in the bank when they whipped up revolvers and locked them inside the bathroom.

They snatchted the key of the vault from the assistant manager and the chief cashier before looting Rs. 5.17 lakh from the strong room and the cash counter.

When Mr.Tapan Nundy, an employee of the bank, tried to put up resistance, the miscreants hit him on his head and face with revolver butt and made good their escape, the SP said.

Bank Manager Sanjoy Chakraborty said there was no security guard in the branch.

He said the robbers were speaking in broken Bengali and Hindi.

The SP said police started an investigation into the incident, but no arrests had so far been made.
