Punjab to spend Rs 62 crore to widen state roads

Chandigarh, Sep 5: The Punjab PWD (B&R) Department in a major drive to widen, strengthen and improve the road network in the state, will spend Rs 62 crore on the repair of 185.93 Km stretch of state highways, main district roads and other district roads.

Stating this here today, PWD Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa said that under Central Road Fund, work on 77.20 Km road length of three major roads Mukerian-Talwara Road, Malout-Sri Ganganagar Road and Mukatsar-Malout Road had already been completed during last six months.

The Minister said that work on the remaining 107.13 Km stretch of road length including Amritsar-Bhikhiwind-Khemkaran Road, Harike-Khalra Road, Bhawanigarh-Sunam-Bhikhi-Kotshamir Road and Patran-Munak-Tohana Road was already in advanced stage of completion.

The Minister said that the PWD Department had already initiated state wide exercise to identity the important roads in the state that require improvement keeping in view the development scenario of next 25 years.

He said that instructions had already been issued that in all future road contracts of the PWD department, six years road maintenance contract would be the part of the main contract. The contractor constructing the road would have the responsibility to maintain that road for next six years. He said that a foolproof contract had been drafted by the PWD, fixing the accountability of the concerned contractor for long term maintenance of road constructed by him.
