NHRC notice to SP on man's death after being pushed out from train

New Delhi, Sep 5 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent a notice to SP, GRP, Shahjahanpur and Secretary, Railway Board on a media report, which said that the TTE on the Sealdah Express had pushed a disabled passenger from the running train, leading to his death.

The Commission has asked the authorities to submit their report on the matter within four weeks.

Taking suo-motu cognizance of the report, which appeared in the "Rashtriya Sahara" on August 31, the Commission said the incident raised a serious issue of violation of human rights of the disabled.

As per the report, a physically challenged person named Imtiaaz and his friend Zafar had boarded the Sealdah Express at Shahjahanpur for Bareilly. The two had tickets for general coach but could not enter the general coach as it was crowded. They, therefore, boarded a sleeper class compartment.

The TTE on duty asked them to pay a fine of Rs.650. On their inability to pay the fine, the TTE manhandled the two and let off Zafar after extracting Rs 50 as bribe.

Since Imtiaaz could not pay the money, the TTE thrashed and pushed him out of the running train. Zafar complained about the incident to the GRP. An Inspector of GRP reached the site and found Imtiaaz lying by the rail track, writhing in pain. Imtiaaz was taken to Shahjahanpur but he died on the way.

The Commission after going through the distressing news, directed that a copy of the news report be sent to the two authorities for a factual report within four weeks.
