Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 5: Kerala Food and Civil Supplies Minister C Divakaran today told the state Assembly that the Central Government assistance was sought to solve the acute shortage of LPG cylinders for domestic consumers.

Replying to a Calling Attention Motion, the Minister said there was a shortage of more than 67,000 cylinders per month against the requirement of 2.76 million cylinders.

Though the State Government had limitations in the matter of LPG supply being managed by oil companies, it would request the Centre to increase the supply. Stringent steps would be taken to prevent the misuse of LPG cylinders meant for domestic purposes.

He said three major oil companies were supplying cylinders to five million consumers in the state through 356 outlets. Though the State Government had put forward a proposal from the Civil Supplies Corporation to run retail LPG gas outlets, the Central Government was yet to take a favourable stand.
