Jamashtami
is
celebrated
to
mark
the
birth
of
Lord
Krishna
who
is
believed
to
be
the
eighth
incarnation
of
Lord
Vishnu,
the
Preserver.
While in Mathura and Vrindavan, cribs and other displays with dolls in traditional costumes depict the life and times of Krishna. In Mumbai, the festival is celebrated as Dahi Handi where young boys climb form a human pyramid and then break a clay pot filled with curd hanging high in the air.
