Eating fish harmful to health and environment:PETA
Kolkata, Sep 05 (UNI) The People for Ethical Treatment for Animals (PETA) in it's yet another veg-campaign has stated that eating fish is not only cruel but also harmful to health and environment.
PETA campaign coordinator in a release here today stated that an advertisement will soon hit the magazines and billboards country wide highlighting the hazards of fish consumption.
He said the fish flesh contains high levels of toxins like mercury, arsenic and lead that causes cardiac problems, cancer and damage to the kidneys and developing foetuses.
''Nine out of ten San Francisco residents, regular fish eaters had elevated blood-mercury levels,'' according to a report by California Pacific Medical Center of United States.
The release further stated that commercial fishing is destructive to the environment as thousands of animals and birds die from swallowing discarded fishing hooks, the Journal of Science stated in 2006.
It also informed that if the fishing continues at such a rate than the oceans would be emptied of fish by 2048.
