Sachar Comm: No to sine die adjournment of Par
New Delhi, Sep 5: In a categorical assertion, the CPI(M) today said it ''is not party'' to any government move to adjourn Parliament sine die and instead made a strong case for a debate on eight lakh tonne wheat import at a much higher rate, price rise and the Action Taken Report on the Sachar Committee.
''We have no knowledge about External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee meeting Leader of Opposition L K Advani today and having agreed to adjourn both Houses of Parliament sine die to save the government from embarrassment,'' CPI(M) floor leaders Basudeb Acharia and Mohammad Salim told a news conference.
The leaders denied that their party or the Left, for that matter, had already gone in for a '' under the table'' agreement with the government to adjourn Parliament sine die.
On being asked a specific question whether they were party to such an arrangement to save the government from embarrassment it was facing on the Indo-US nuclear pact as the Opposition was not allowing the House to function, the Left leaders alleged that both the government and the Opposition were running away from debating the ATR on the Sachar Committee as it suited them.
''The Government's ATR is just a postdated cheque, and nothing substantial,'' they added.
They also announced that they would stage a dharna before the Parliament House tomorrow to protest against the ongoing Malabar wargames in the Bay of Bengal as the BJP was not allowing Parliament to conduct its business.
Elaborating how the BJP was adamant on not allowing the House to do its business, they said saffron party leaders told Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee this morning in his chamber that they would not allow the House to do its business. ''The Speaker's sane advice to BJP leaders fell on deaf ears,'' they added.
''They(BJP) did not allow even the Question Hour,'' the comrades said, adding that it was just ''a handful of BJP members who are creating a ruckus by raising slogans, sitting in the well and creating pandemonium''.
