Guwahati, Sep 5 (UNI) Former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Gegong Apang today denied that he had conspired 'false assassination bids on self for political benefit'.

The issue rocked Arunachal Pradesh politics as his opponents were using it to corner him.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Apang denied that he had fabricated a confessional statement by a surrendered female militant and maintained that there were indeed assassination bids on him.

''A group of politically influenced and misguided people have made a false complaint against me bringing baseless allegations,'' he said.

''I have been maintaining silence till now. I see no reason for the people targeting me,'' he added.

He was reacting to charges by adviser to incumbent Chief Minister Takam Sanjay, Arunachal Citizen's Rights chairperson Bamang Anthony and MLA Kipa Babu that Mr Apang had paid a woman militant cadre for saying during a surrender ceremony that three persons were part of a couple of unsuccessful assassination bids on Mr Apang.

He was also accused of having paid to the tune of Rs 20 lakh for getting the false statement. The cadre had subsequently retracted the statement and said she was paid to frame the persons.

The trio had filed a criminal case against the former Chief Minister and Mr Apang had acquired stay orders through a writ petition in Gauhati High Court. The matter is sub judice.

Mr Apang said assassination plots were hatched against him during his term as the Chief Minister and the accusers were part of a larger group trying to destroy his political career by spreading false allegations.

''They cannot finish me politically, so they tried finishing me physically,'' he added.

The former Chief Minister alleged that people at the top were pressuring the police and administration to pursue the case against him which even officers had admitted.

He refused to comment on whether his successor Dorji Khandu was leading the conspiracy to defame him. ''I have informed the party high command about everything in writing. I have full faith in them and the judiciary and will get justice,'' he said.

On his chances of comeback at the helm of state politics, Mr Apang said, ''I am positive that I will make a comeback. I have served as Chief minister for 23 years and have nothing to fear.'' He said the administration was being run by the bureaucracy in the state and it was not a welcome sign.

''I do not interfere in the functioning of the government. But if they want my help, I am willing,'' he added.

He also rubbished allegations of financial irregularities brought against him by the present government.
