Allahabad peaceful, curfew ends in 2 areas

Allahabad, Sep 5 (UNI) With peace returning in the holy city, the district administration today lifted curfew from two police station areas completely, while relaxing it for day time in three areas.

Curfew was imposed in five police station areas here after violence engulfed the district, following a rumour that gripped Kaladanda area that some pages of a holy book were being burnt.

Thousands of people had taken to the streets due to which curfew had been clamped in Kareli, Atarsuia, Shahganj, Khuldabad, Kotwali and Rajroop Pur police outpost of the Dhoomanganj police station.

With peace returning fast, curfew has been lifted completely from Atarsuia and Kotwali station areas this morning, while day curfew was withdrawn in Khuldabad, Shahganj and Kareli. The night curfew would continue in these areas from 2000 hrs to 0600 hrs, sources said.

All schools and colleges, which were closed due to violence, reopened today.

Curfew was relaxed from 1000 hrs to 1700 hrs in Kotwali, Shahganj, Atarsuia, Khuldabad and Dhumanganj. While, it was relaxed from 1000 hrs to 1300 hrs at Kareli station area on Jananmashtami yesterday.

Several police personnel, including two sub-inspectors, were grievously injured in the protest, in which two police vehicles were also torched.

The mob had later gheraoed the Kareli police station and raised slogans. Three youths were injured after police opened fire and lobbed tear gas shells. So far, 16 people have been arrested in this connection.
