Admirers proposed Gayatri Devi during Emergency to save from jail

Jaipur, Sep 5 (UNI) Rajmata Gayatri Devi of Jaipur is known worldwide for her beauty and elegance and some foreign admirers even went to the extent of proposing her to save her from serving a jail term during Emergency.

This has found mention in a book 'Samajwad Se Jatiwad ke Bhanwar' by veteran journalist Vijay Bhandari.

According to Mr Bhandari, the proposal was made to Gayatri Devi on the ground that after marrying a foreigner, Gayatri Devi will become a foreign citizen and could be saved from incarceration. Gayatri Devi and her step son Bhawani Singh were arrested by the police in July 1975 under COFEPOSA for violating Foregin Exchange Regulation rules.

In Tihar Jail Rajmata shared a room with CPI(M-L) leader Sreelatha Swaminathan.
