One person arrested on charges of rape and murder of a college girl

Sirsi, Sept 4 (UNI) Uttara Kannada district police have arrested one person in connection with a rape and murder of a college girl, yesterday.

Superintendent of Police N Shivaprasad told reporters here today that Suresh Honnappa Nayak (31) of Sannalli of Sirsi taluk of Uttara Kannada district has confessed that he raped and murdered Vatsala Kamalakar Hegde, a first year BCom student of Kalmane Village. She was studying in Sirsi.

She was returning home after class on August 17 when the accused attacked her from back side and after tying her hands by her vale took her to nearby bush and raped and murdered.

The accused was also involved in another attempt to rape on a college girl about 20 days back. But was not taken seriously by the police. If police had detected the earlier case promptly this might have not taken place, Shivaprasad agreed.
