Bangalore, Sep 3 (UNI) Seeking to bring the benefits of Global Positioning System (GPS) to the common people in the world Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman G Madhavan Nair today urged the need for adopting the multiple satellites that were in orbit and make them more useful for the people.

In his Inaugural address at the second meeting of the International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG) here, he said there was a need capacity building based on the systems that were already available. This would help make professional applications for use of day to day needs, he said.

"The most important need is evolving a platform for international cooperation. There is already a systems like Galileo of the European Community and the Russian GLANOSS. The Galileo programme is going through birth stage, while we are hoping that soon the full constellation of both the Russian system and Galileo programme will be available for the world," he said.

He said Galileo system was an example for cooperation between various nations in the European region. Such developments would go a long way in harmonising the GPS system worldwide, he said.

"As for as regional systems were concerned we are happy to say that India has decided to provide, not only the support for world GPS systems, but also have its own platform of satellite constellation under Indian Regional Navigation System that can prove to be very useful in this part of the globe," he said.
