Left will not compromise the country's sovereignty: Brinda

Agartala, Sep 4 (UNI) CPM Politburo member and women front leader Brinda Karat has reiterated that the Left Front would not compromise with the Congress regarding the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Talking to UNI at the Agartala airport here yesterday, Ms Karat lambasted the parties which supported the deal and made it clear that they would not allow Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to ''mortgage India's sovereignty to the Bush administration.'' ''We believe no Indian is willing to accept the move to operationalise the Indo-US Nuclear deal threatening the country's sovereignty,'' Ms Karat underlined.

Elabortaing on the Left Front's stand on bilateral relationship with neighbouring countries, including Pakistan, she said, ''We want India to continue to maintain good relations with neighbouring countries and even with the US but not at the cost of our sovereignty.'' Without naming the Congress, Ms Karat slammed the party for ''abetting insurgency in the Northeastern states to retain power'' adding that the party had ''failed miserably to tackle militancy in the region.'' However, the Left Front government in Tripura had been more successful in combating militancy than other state governments in the region, she claimed.

Ms Karat, accompanied by CPI(M) women front president Subhasini Ali, was here in connection with the state conference of the Democratic Women Association, a women's body of the Left Front.
