Flood situation still grim in Barak Valley
Silchar, Sep 4 (UNI) The Barak valley continued to reel under flood as all major rivers, including the mighty Barak in south Assam, flowed well above the danger level today.
However, the water level partially receded over past twelve hours.
Official sources said flood control dykes of Rukni and Katakhal rivers were breached in at least two places last evening, causing havoc in the vast areas of Cachar and Hailakandi districts.
Thousands of people were rendered homeless and parts of two National Highways and a number of PWD roads were submerged.
While, seven houses in Ratanpur area in Hailakandi district were washed away by flood water on Monday night due to breach of a dyke of Katakhal river, vast areas in Sonai circle of Cachar district were inundated by the Rukni river near Kabuganj.
On Sunday swirling water of Rukni washed away 11 houses in Channighat village near Dholai. However, there was no report of any loss of life.
Traffic on NH 53 connecting Imphal with Badarpurghat and NH 54 connecting Silchar with Aizawl was partially affected for the past couple of days due to inundation in Cachar and Hailakandi districts, the sources said.
