Allahabad calm: Day curfew lifted, schools to reopen tomorrow
Allahabad, Sep 4 (UNI) With normalcy returning to the holy city, the district administration has decided to lift the day curfew in all the five police station areas while night curfew would continue in three areas.
Curfew was imposed in five police station areas here after violence engulfed the district, on August 31, following a rumour in Kaladanda area that some pages of a holy book were being burnt.
Thousands of people had taken to streets following which curfew had been clamped on Kareli, Atarsuia, Shahganj, Khuldabad, Kotwali and Rajroop police outpost of the Dhoomanganj police station.
Talking to newspersons, District Magistrate Ashish Kumar Goel said with peace returning fast, day curfew would be lifted in all the five police station areas from tomorrow. However, night curfew would continue in Kareli, Khuldabad and Shahganj areas from 2000 hrs to 0600 hrs.
The DM informed all schools and colleges, which were closed due to violence, would reopen from tomorrow.
Curfew was relaxed from 1000 hrs to 1700 hrs in Kotwali, Shahganj, Atarsuia, Khuldabad and Dhumanganj. While, it was relaxed from 1000 hrs to 1300 hrs at Kareli station area on Janmashtami today.
Several police personnel, including two Sub-Inspectors, were grievously wounded in the protest, in which two police vehicles were also torched.
The mob later gheraoed the Kareli Police Station and shouted slogans. Three youths were injured after police opened fire and lobbed teargas shells. So far, 16 persons had been arrested in this connection.
