Allahabad calm, curfew relaxed for Janamashtami

Allahabad, Sep 4 (UNI) With peace returning to the holy city, curfew has been relaxed for more hours today on the occesion of Janamashtami in five station areas.

Curfew was imposed in five police station areas here after violence engulfed the district on August 31, following a rumour in Kaladanda area that some pages of a holy book were being burnt.

Thousands of people had taken to streets due to which curfew had been clamped on Kareli, Atarsuia, Shahganj, Khuldabad, Kotwali and Rajroop police outpost of the Dhoomanganj police station.

Curfew has been lifted from 1000 hrs to 1700 hrs from four station areas -- Kotwali, Shahganj, Atarsuia, Khuldabad and Dhumanganj. While, it was relaxed from 1000 hrs to 1300 hrs at Kareli station area, sources said.

Meanwhile, curfew would tonight be lifted from Atarsuia and Kotwali station on Janamashtami.

Several police personnel, including two Sub-Inspectors, were grievously wounded in the protest, in which two police vehicles were also torched.

The mob had later gheraoed the Kareli Police Station and raised slogans. Three youths were injured after police opened fire and lobbed teargas shells.
