13 teachers honoured with CBSE Teachers Award 2006

New Delhi, Sep 4 (UNI) The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) today honoured 13 teachers with the 'Teachers Award for 2006' in recognition of their services, on the eve of the Teachers Day.

The award, given away by Minister of state for Human Resource Development M A A Fatami, consisted of a merit certificate, a shawl and cash prize of Rs 25,000.

Lauding the role of this community in shaping the future of the country, Mr Fatami said only good education will lead to development of India.

''Unfortunately the number of good and qualified teachers is not adequate in the country...A country which lacks education will not be able to progress. It will lag behind in every sector,'' he added.

The Minister said besides power and a vibrant economy India needs education for all its citizens to achieve the status of a developed country by 2020.

''We require to put in place a very good education policy,'' he said.

Admitting that many posts for teachers were lying vacant, Mr Fatami said education is a priority area for the Central Government.

''The Government has provided the maximum amount of grant to its various education schemes,'' he added.
