Srinagar, Sep 3 (UNI) A girl jumped into the Jhelum river while the body of a boy was recovered in the Kashmir valley today, official sources said.

The Body of a ninth class student Hilal Ahmad Ganie was recovered from an orchard at village Saidpora in Shopian district.

The sources said an unidentified girl jumped into river Jhelum at Nawa Kadal in the downtown city. Efforts were on to fish out her body, they added.

Despite fatwa by muslim ulmas against committing suicide, declaring it an unislamic act, people, mostly women, continued to take extreme steps in the Kashmir valley.

Officials said 315 cases of suicide, attempt to suicide and abetment to suicide were registered in the state in 2005 as compared to 295 in 2006.

They said insecurity, unemployment, family discord, failed love affairs, failure in examinations and stress were some of the main causes of people taking the extreme step.

Suicide was essentially a social problem and could be controlled when the people actively come forward in this regard and join hands with administrative and voluntary groups, sources said.
