Srinagar, Sep 3 (UNI) Suicides continued to stalk Jammu and Kashmir as yet another girl jumped into the Jhelum river today.

Official sources said an unidentified girl jumped into the river at Nawa Kadal in the downtown city. Efforts were on to recover her body, they added.

Another body of a boy was also recovered in the Kashmir valley, the sources said.

The body of the ninth class student, Hilal Ahmad Ganie, was recovered from an orchard at village Saidpora in Shopian district.

Despite fatwa by muslim Ulemas against committing suicide, declaring it an 'unislamic' act, people, mostly women, continue to take extreme steps in the Kashmir valley.

The officials said 315 cases of suicide, attempt to suicide and abetment to suicide were registered in the state in 2005 as compared to 295 in 2006.

They said insecurity, unemployment, family discord, failure in love, examinations and stress were some of the main causes of people taking the extreme step.

Suicide is essentially a social problem and could be controlled when the people actively come forward in this regard and join hands with administrative and voluntary groups, the sources added.
