DTC drivers to be sensitised to be courteous to women

New Delhi, Sep 3 (UNI) In what would seem an endeavour to make the Delhi Transport Corporation more 'commuter friendly', a training programme to sensitise bus drivers and conductors to be well mannered and courteous while talking to all the passengers including women, aged and physically challenged persons, was launched by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit here.

Speaking on the occasion, which also marked launch of a helpline Phone Service No.52555 and 9971755555 for women passengers of DTC buses, the Chief Minister said the training programme, being conducted by the DTC alongwith NGO JAGORI, would bring awareness amongst DTC drivers and conductors to become fully well versed with all good manners while dealing with women, aged, blind and other physically challenged persons.

During the programme, they would be imparted practical training to make them understand the difficulties being faced by these categories of passengers in boarding and getting out of buses, so that they could inculcate a good behaviour sense.

Talking about the new helpline, the Chief Minister said women passengers would be able to dial helpline numbers in case of any problem during travelling in DTC buses.

The complaints received through the helpline would be properly addressed and closely monitored. The DTC would also ensure a safe and secure travel to blind passengers. The All India Confederation of Blinds have been requested to provide input and suggestions in respect of difficulties, being faced by blind passengers in the city buses.

On this occasion, Ms Dikshit exhorted DTC bus drivers to voluntarily observe speed restrictions to curb accidents on roads.

She also mentioned about campaign of her government, which disseminated a message of "Walk Safe and Drive Safe".

The Chief Minister instructed CMD DTC to establish a new upgraded training Centre with driving tracks for Drivers and Conductors at Ghumman Hera.

Ms Dikshit disclosed that air-conditioned buses would be added in DTC fleet. DTC would also bring around 3-4 thousand buses during the next few years. The buses would also be equipped with global positioning system which would provide information on time to time location of buses.

Present on ther occasion, Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf expressed confidence that DTC drivers and conductors should become more courteous after attending training course.

''The Radio Taxi service, which has been in force in Delhi has provided relief to women passengers because these taxis are equipped with GPS System to ensure sense of safety and security to the passengers,'' Mr Yousuf said adding that there has been a sea-change in public transport system during last eight years.

CMD DTC Anshu Prakash also graced the occasion with his presence.
