Sriharikota, AP, Sep 2 (UNI) The 2,130 kg INSAT-4CR communication satellite, is designed to provide Direct-to-Home (DTH) services, Digital Satellite Gathering (DSNG), VSAT services and other high bit rate data transmissions.

It carries 12 Ku-band 36 MHz bandwidth transponders to provide an effective Isotropic Radiated Power of 51.5 dBW at Edge of Coverage with foot print covering the Indian mainland. It also incorporates a Ku-band Beacon as an aid to tracking the satellite.

INSAT-4CR, with a mission life in excess of ten years, is designed to replace the identical INSAT-4C, which was lost due to the failed GSLV-FO2 mission in June 2006.

Soon after its injection into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) by GSLV-F04, the solar panels of INSAT-4C would be deployed. In the following days, the satellite would be manoeuvred to its 36,000 km high Geosynchronous Orbit (GSO) by firing Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) on the board.

This is the third satellite in the INASAT-4 series. The first two, INSAT-4A and INSAT-4B were launched in December 2005 and March 2006 respectively, on board the European Ariane Launch Vehicle.

The Indian National Satellite (INSAT) system, which revolutionalised the country's television and radio broadcasting, telecommunications and meteorological sectors, was commissioned with the launch of INSAT-1B in August 1983.
