New Delhi, Sep 1 (UNI) Minister of State for Industry Ashwani Kumar has said the country plans to add nearly 25,000 MW power generation capacity by 2025, wiping out the power deficit.

The huge generation of capacity that will be added to the existing 3,500 MW will give a big push to the growth of the economy, Mr Kumar said while addressing at the industry body PHDCCI's International Tax Conference here.

The Minister said that other than the physical infrastructure, which will get a big boost in the coming years, India's growth will be driven by the emergence of a strong knowledge economy.

In the next 10 years, the Government is going to spend over 550 billion dollars only on infrastructure. Of that, about 360 billion dollars will be committed for building roads, highways, telecom etc, he added.

Mr Kumar emphasised the Government has crafted plans to roll out strategy for knowledge revolution, under which 1,500 new universities will be set up, creation of more number of IITs and up-gradation of existing ones.

He also underlined the need for creating a strong infrastructure for R&D, which is presently very inadequate both at the public and private sector.

India Inc, the Minister said, was in an unprecedented trajectory that its outbound investment had leaped several fold. Indian industry in 2007 fiscal had invested 28.9 billion dollars abroad as against 4.3 billion dollars in 2005 and 0.7 billion dollars a few decades back.

''This is a true barometer of globalisation and was made possible due to huge foreign exchange surpluses that the country had accumulated on account of a variety reasons especially quantum jump in the services exports,'' he said.
