Lucknow, Aug 31 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to launch an intensive state-wide drive in the wake of reports of synthetic milk being sold by vendors in the state capital and other major cities.

The issue came up after synthetic milk samples were collected by the authorities in western parts of UP in the recent past coupled with media reports about rampant sale of such products.

The problems for the state government were compounded following confession of a kingpin of western UP that he supplied synthetic milk at 'Parag' booths in Bareilly run by state owned Pradeshik Co-operative Dairy Fedration (PCDF).

Official sources, however, denied that there was any impurity in the popular milk brand 'Parag' but confirmed the state-wide drive would be launched to clear the issue further.

Uttar Pradesh, one of the chief producers of milk in the northern belt of the country and also a supplier of milk to 'Mother Dairy' in the national capital, had cases of synthetic milk in the past also.

Many of the individual milk vendors and small dairies had been found to have indulged in the sale of synthetic milk, made from urea, cheap detergent powder and sub-standard vegetable oil during the raids.

Also, the sale of synthetic 'khoya' was detected in the state capital prompting authorities to launch a drive in Lucknow.

Admitting that the cases of sale of synthetic milk have been unearthed in the state capital as well as in other places of the state, the officials said the strips for chemical testing of milk were being made available at all the PCDF booths and the Dairy Development officials had been instructed to take stern action against the erring ones.
