Shahabuddin gets10 yrs RI for attempt on life of SP

Siwan, Aug 31: A special sessions court today awarded ten years' rigorous imprisonment to incarcerated RJD MP Md Shahabuddin and two police personnel Jahangir Alam and Khalid in connection with a murderous attack on the then Siwan Superintendent of Police S K Singhal.Additional district and sessions judge Gyaneshwar Srivastav awarded punishment to the MP under three separate charges.

Apart from ten years' RI under attempt to murder case, the court slapped fine of Rs 2000 on the convicts failing which they will be liable to serve RI for additional six months.

Under Arms act the judge sentenced them to seven years' RI with a fine of Rs 2000 each. The convicts were given two years' simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500 each under act 353 for hindering government functioning.

Earlier, Md Shahabuddin was brought to the court under tight security from Siwan jail.

This is the fourth case in which the MP had been sentenced with punishment. The court had already awarded life to Md Shahabuddin facing 50 criminal cases.

The case in which the court pronounced the punishment is related to an incident in which Md Shahabuddin had chased and fired at the SP on May 3, 1996. According to the FIR, Mohammad Shahabuddin had also instigated his supporters to open fire on the cavalcade of Mr Singhal when the SP had gone to Darauli Mathiya village to defuse tension. Mr Singhal had narrowly escaped the bullets.
