SBI tops PSBs with Rs 5,258 cr net NPAs in March-07

New Delhi, Aug 31 (UNI) Country's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) had the highest net non-performing assets (NPAs) at Rs 5,258 crore as on March 31, 2007, Lok Sabha was informed today.

It was Rs 4,906 crore at the end of 2005-06 fiscal.

Corporation Bank's net NPAs at the end of 2006-07 fiscal was nil, a statement tabled in the House said.

Replying to a question by Mr M Appadurai, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said in spite of fresh slippages, gross NPAs of public sector banks decreased from Rs 42,117 crore as on March 31, 2006 to Rs 38,957 crore as on the corresponding day of 2007.

However, the statement tabled in the House showed that net NPAs.

Increased from Rs 14,560 crore on March 31, 2006 to Rs 15,003 crore on March 31, 2007.

Of the total 28 public sector banks (PSBs) UCO bank had net NPAs of Rs 1,006 crore as on March 31, 2007, followed by Canara Bank Rs 927 crore, Central Bank of India Rs 878 crore, Punjab National Bank Rs 726 crore, IDBI Ltd Rs 722 crore, Bank of India Rs 632 crore, Union Bank of India Rs 601 crore and Bank of Baroda Rs 502 crore.

All the remaining banks had NPAs of less than Rs 500 crore each, the statement added.
