Rs 6.75 lakh seized from 2 Singapore-bound passengers
Chennai, Aug 31 (UNI) Customs officials seized Indian currencies to the tune of Rs 6.75 lakh from two Singapore-bound passengers at the Anna international airport in the wee hours today.
Airport sources said the duo--Harichandra (42) from Tiruvarur and Md Asgar Khan (29) from Chennai--were carrying huge amount of Indian currencies in violation of Customs rules.
The seizures were made by the customs officials when they were about to board the flight at around 0100 hrs this morning.
Harichandra was carrying Rs 4.75 lakh and Mr Khan Rs two lakh, though the customs rules permit them to carry only Rs 5,000 in Indian currencies and the rest in foreign exchange while travelling to other country.
They were handed over to Customs Commissioner Rajan, who seized 50 per cent of the cash from them and imposed a ten per cent fine on the remaining amount.
Their journey was cancelled and the duo were asked to carry only Rs 5000 in Indian currencies and exchange the rest of the amount to foreign currencies.
