Rain brings respite to Andamanese reeling under water scarcity

Port Blair, Aug 31 (UNI) Following incessant rainfall and subsequent availability of water, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lt Governor Bhopinder Singh today directed Andaman Public Works Department(PWD) and Port Blair Municipal Council(PBMC) to release drinking water at least once in every three days.

''Hit by severe water crisis, the Islanders were demanding restoration of regular water supply, which was disrupted since December 2006. There is a growing discomfort among islanders, who are getting drinking water once in every four or five days,''said Subhasis Ray General Secretary of HELP (Healthy Environment and Less Pollution), an NGO of Andaman.

Mr Singh had further directed the authorities to concerned examine the possibilities of drinking water supply to the public every alternate days,'' he added.
