Nomadic Gujjar-Bakerwals migrating from hill to plains in J
Srinagar, Aug 31 (UNI) In view of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramzan, the nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals tribes in Jammu and Kashmir have started their seasonal migration to the plains one month ahead of their scheduled timing.
However, Hindu and Buddhist tribes of the state which include Gaddi, Sippi, Changpa and Brockpa, would start their migration in time in the last week of September as per the past practice.
Dr Javaid Rahi, Secretary, Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation said that in normal circumstances, these communities start their seasonal migration towards Poonch, Rajouri, Kutha, Doda, Jammu and other areas, in and around last week of September every year.
But, he said, keeping in view the holy month of Ramzan which starts from September 14, 2007, these nomadic muslim tribes have preponed their backward journey by one month.
Dr Rahi said that it was after 36 years when these nomadic tribes had preponed their seasonal migration because as per Hijra (Islamic) Calendar, the holy month of Ramzan falls in the month of September after every 36th year.
The Gujjars and Bakerwals tribes prefer to celebrate Eid in warmer areas, he said.
He said the nomadic tribes who had already started their seasonal migration towards plains and winter areas said that due to early migration from the higher reaches, they would have to face heat and shortage of fodder in the plains.
Dr Rahi appealed to various government agencies to mobile their resources for providing necessary logistical facilities to these nomadic tribes so that they are able to move smoothly towards their destinations without loss to their live-stock and other properties .
He demanded repair of main tribal migration routes included Mughal Road, G T Road, Jamiya Gali, Gora Batta, Nanansar, Ropadi and Dharhal Pass.
