Liberhan Commission term extended to Oct 31, 2007

New Delhi, Aug 31 (UNI) The term of the Liberhan Commission of Inquiry probing the sequence of events leading to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992, has been extended by two months up to October 31.

The Commission was constituted by the then Narasimha Rao Government a fortnight after the demolition of the Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid structures by the Karsevaks.

The term of the Commission, headed by Justice M S Liberhan, was due to expire today. The Government had extended the tenure of the Commission on 40 occasions since its appointment. An expenditure of Rs.717.66 lakh has been incurred on the Commission till July 31, 2007.

Many prominent leaders including former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao, V P Singh, Leader of the Opposition L K Advani and other prominent leaders from various political parties like the RSS and Bajrang Dal have appeared and deposed before the Commission.
