KYF demands district status for Sadar Hills

Imphal, Aug 31 (UNI) The Kuki Youths' Federation (KYF) has urged the Manipur government to grant full-fledged district status to Sadar Hills which is presently a part of Senapati district.

KYF secretary general H L Gangte here today said if the state government failed to declare Sadar Hills as an autonomous district, the federation would support the agitations launched by the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC).

''The SHDDC's demand to grant full district status, including posting of Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, is supported not only by one particular community but the entire state,'' Mr Gangte claimed adding that the SHDDC had been voicing its demand for last 35 years.

Cabinet decisions were taken, Memorandum of Understanding signed and several assurances given by successive governments but no concrete step was taken to grant district status, Mr Gangte alleged.

''The government should not neglect the grievances of the people of Sadar Hills and should consider their demand seriously,'' Mr Gangte said.

He alleged that the government's failure to declare Sadar Hills as full-fledged district since the past 35 years was an insult to the people and the Kuki community in particular.
