Karat discusses political situation with Basu

Kolkata, Aug 31(UNI) CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat met veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu at his residence today to discuss the current political situation in the wake of the Left-UPA standoff over the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Mr Karat, who was in the city to deliver the Naren Sen Memorial Lecture on the Indo-US nuke agreement, called on the CPI(M) patriarch at Salt Lake, on his way back to the airport.

He was accompanied by the party's Polit Bureau member and state committee Secretary Biman Basu.

Mr Karat's visit to Mr Basu's residence was significant since the nonagenarian leader did not attend the recent Polit Bureau and Central Committee meetings that deliberated on the implications of the nuclear pact and decided to take a hard stand on it.
