Mumbai: IIJS gets off to a grand start
Mumbai, Aug 31: Union Minister of State for Industries Ashwani Kumar, while highlighting the importance of the gems and jewellery sector, has pointed out that it is one of the most important sector that contribute to the country's export basket.
He was speaking after inaugurating the 24th India International Jewellery Show (IIJS), organised by Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), here today.
Mr Kumar pointed out that one of the biggest effects of economic liberalisation and globalisation has been the radical change that has come about in the gems and jewellery sector. The industry, he pointed out, provides employment to about 30 lakh people.
The IIJS is Asia's second largest and most popular show. This year there is a greater number of participants -- 720 domestic companies and 118 international participants.
Many of the international participants will be housed in their country pavilions organised by the Antwerp World Diamond Center, the Italian Trade Commission, the Thai Gems and Jewellery Traders Association and the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group.
GJEPC chairman Sanjay Kothari said the IIJS has grown to become a brand in itself on the lines of Basel and Las Vegas shows.
IIJS being a multi faceted show, its prime objective remains business. Everyday visitors and participants can attend seminars with special tracks, round tables, panel discussions with a special focus on luxury retailing, online selling, diamond updates and professionalising the family business.
Many prominent international trade organisations like Diamond Laboratories, HRD Antwerp, Rio Tinto, and Polygon will be presenting the latest developments during the IIJS.
