Tokyo stocks up, powered by US rise
Tokyo, Aug 30: Japanese stocks powered higher on Thursday, rising more than 1 per cent on spillover from a technology-led Wall Street surge and higher oil prices that lifted energy stocks, but gains were capped by a stronger yen amid thin trade.
The surge in oil prices, which jumped more than 2 per cent on Wednesday on news of a sharp drop in U.S. crude and gasoline stocks, also contributed to a rise in trading house shares.
The benchmark Nikkei ended the morning session up 1.3 per cent or 206.12 points at 16,218.95.
The broad TOPIX index gained 1.1 per cent or 17.66 points to 1,575.21.
