Mobile phone production in India to exceed 100 mln units in 2011

Mumbai, Aug 30 (UNI) Mobile phone production in India is expected to grow to 107 million units from 31 million units by 2011, according to research agency, Gartner.

Gartner stated the mobile phone production revenue is expected to reach 13.6 billion dollars by 2011 from 4.9 billion dollars in 2006.

At present the mobile phone production in India is dominated by the top five global handset vendors --Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG.

However, the research pointed out that the new partners, local as well as global, to enter the mobile phone manufacturing market in India, are aided by the global electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider.

Gartner Principal Research Analyst Ganesh Ramamurthy said, ''Existing global handset vendors, as well as new entrants will outsource their production to EMS vendors to reduce time to market and achieve faster penetration for their own branded handsets.'' The research also cautioned that despite the high growth prospects, there are certain grey areas in mobile manufacturing in the country.

It also stated that the country faces a key challenge as it lacks mature component supply base to support local mobile phone manufacturing.
