India may import two high milk yielding cow breeds from Pak

Amritsar, Aug 30 (UNI) In order to give an impetus to dairy farming, India is contemplating importing high milk yielding cow breeds from neighbouring Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference here here yesterday Animal Welfare Board of India, Chairman S K Mittal said that so far the cow breeds-- Red Sindhi and Sahiwal for import. Both these breeds are decreasing at a rapid pace in India, he added.

Mr Mittal had recently visited Pakistan and spotted these breeds in large numbers there. He even discussed the matter with the Pakistani authorities and got a positive response.

Mr Mittal said the Pakitistani authorities assured him of taking up the issue with their government. Similarly, he said he would also raise the matter with the government here.

''There were also talks of some rare breeds in Pakistan, which were easily available in India and I had proposed to the Pakistani authories that India could also receiprocate by exporting cow breeds needed by them,'' he said.

According to Mr Mittal, it is convenient to import rare breeds from Pakistan than countries like Denmark, Switzerland or Germany.

Admitting that there was bothing in writing as yet, he said a strong recommendation would be made in this regaird to the government.
