Independent member of J

Srinagar, Aug 30 (UNI) An independent member from Banihal today walked out from the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly after he was dissatisfied with the answer of a minister concerning a road accident in which 15 people were killed and seven others wounded on June 16.

Raising the issue through a calling attention motion, Moulvi Abdul Rashid demanded to know the names and the compensation paid to those killed as well as injured in the road accident at Makerkote, Banihal.

Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) Taj Mohiuddin confirmed that 15 people were killed and seven wounded in the accident.

He said names and other details of the deceased and injured would be provided to the member in the House.

Mr Taj said there was no provision for any ex-gratia relief in case of death due to an accident. However, some relief of Rs four thousand to Rs five thousand was being considered to the next of kin of the deceased persons by District Commissioners.

He said family members of the accident victims were getting compensation from the accident tribunal and documents, including insurance of the ill-fated vehicle, were valid.

Deputy Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone, who was in the chair, directed the minister to take up the issue with the prosecuting agency to speed up the case.
