Forty Youth Congress supporters arrested
Kolkata, Aug 30 (UNI) Police arrested about 40 Youth Congress activists when they staged a snap demonstration in front of the state Secretariat here today in protest against the alleged plot to put party MP Adhir Choudhury behind the bar.
Holding party flags and shouting slogans, the demonstrators suddenly emerged in front of the central gate of the Writers' Buildings this afternoon making police scurry for throwing a protective ring.
They alleged that a recent court order to police to arrest Mr Choudhury was the result of a CPI(M) conspiracy against the Congress strongman from Baharampore.
Tension ran high as policemen grappled with the Congressmen while arresting them for staging demonstration in the prohibited area.
Police, however, said all the arrested were later released.
Mr Chowdhury, arrested in 2005 in connection with a twin murder case, was acquitted in May this year after a sessions court found him not guilty.
However, Calcutta High Court directed police yesterday to rearrest the Congress MP and 13 others, named in the case and produce them in the court.
