Defence secretary briefed on Kashmir and border situation

Srinagar, Aug 30 (UNI) On his maiden visit to Jammu and Kashmir after assuming office as Defence Secretary,Vijay Singh was given a detailed brief by senior Army officers about the overall security situation in the state.

Accomapnied by a high-level delegation from Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr Singh interacted with senior officers of Army in Badami Bagh Cantonment, immediately after his arrival here.

Lt Gen H S Panag, GOC-in-C, Northern Command, Lt General A S Sekhon, GOC 15 Corps and Lt General P K Sapru, GOC 16 Corps presented an overview of security situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Defence Secretary was also briefed about timely and realistic compensation for land, orchard and buildings occupied by Army.

The secretary announced that Defence Minister has released Rs 10 Crore for interim relief for civilians who suffered losses in recent Khundrdo Fire in 21 Field Ordinance Depot on August 11.

According to Defence Ministry sources , Mr Singh was also informed about the recent infiltration attempts made by militants from across the border.

He was also given details about the measures taken by the Army to foil such infiltration attempts by militants waiting in camps in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
