Database on NRIs to check vanishing brides
New Delhi, Aug 30 (UNI) To check the rising cases of vanishing brides and abandoned grooms abroad, the government will ask Indian missions to compile a database on Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has got 89 complaints this year regarding women being deserted or divorced by their husbands. Last year the figure was 65.
Complaints are also received by the Ministry for Women and Child Development, the National Commission for Women and the National Human Rights Commission.
An inter-ministerial committee has been constituted to study the problems arising in marriages with NRIs and to suggest ways to address them, said minister for overseas Indian affairs Vayalar Ravi.
A task force set up by the committee has suggested that special prosecutors be appointed to help women in distress, he told the Rajya Sabha during Question Hour.
Various studies say about 30,000 brides from Punjab were deserted by their husbands in the past two years.
