Mumbai, Aug 30 (UNI) Joint Commissioner Textiles Shashi Singh today urged the need for a co-ordinated effort by the State and Centre to boost the upcoming automotive textile industry.

Addressing the conference organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) here today, Ms Singh said the Centre has already taken up various initiatives in order to encourage the automotive textile industry, that presently accounts for seven per cent share in the total domestic technical market.

''Auto sector is poised to grow rapidly and the textile sector has to gear up to meet the demands,'' Ms Singh said.

Ms Singh said that the Gujarat Government has announced a subsidy to the manufacturers engaged in automotive textile and is also going ahead with further sops. She added that the Centre has been in talks with Maharashtra Government to provide similar incentives.

She stressed for concentrated efforts by the State and Centre to boost the industry.

The Joint Commissioner further informed that the Centre has embarked on a plan to provide a financial assistance of Rs 15 crore each to at least six centres of excellence to guide the automotive textile manufacturers.

In his opening remarks, FICCI's Western Region Chairman Sushil Jiwarajka said that India must seek and encourage foreign investment in a big way. He further urged for a constant interaction between the industry, academia and market research organisations, not only within India but also overseas.
