ASI seeks additional 25.73 cr for development works
New Delhi, Aug 30 (UNI) The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has sought an additional budgetary provision of Rs 25.73 crore to undertake specific developmental work at 46 centrally-protected monuments in the capital prior to the Commonwealth Games in 2010, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni, in a written reply, said the development activities included structural repair, chemical preservation, provision of tourist amenities, environmental measures and illumination of the monuments.
She said the Planning Commission (PC) has recommended taking up works for 2007-08 from the budget already provided and placing its demand before the PC for 2008-09 and 2009-10.
The ASI maintained 3667 centrally-protected monuments with an existing strength of 502 conservation staff under different cadres.
Replying to another question, Ms Soni said there was no delay in the restoration work in the famous thousand pillar temple in Warangal district in Andhra Pradesh.
She said the design of the foundation had already been finalised and approved.
The foundation design was finalised in consultation with the National Institute of Technology, Warangal keeping in view the requirements. The granular pile foundation was chosen, over which a stone masonary platform would be constructed, above which the dismantled Kalyana Mandapam structure would be reconstructed, she added.
The work was expected to be completed within a period of two-and-a-half years, Ms Soni said.
