New Delhi, Aug 29 (UNI) Naxal activities were confined only to some pockets of the 11 affected states, the Government informed the Rajya Sabha today.

In a written reply to questions by SP's Abu Asim Azmi and Amar Singh, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said about 30 security personnel were killed in Chhattigarh in the past two months while three were killed in Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh in June 2007.

He said naxalites procured their weapons mostly through looting or got them manufactured illegally. There was no information about these elements receiving weapons from foreign countries, he added.

He said the Centre could not frame a policy on the violence as Law and Order was a state subject.

The Centre was supplementing the efforts of the states through a slew of measures, including deployment of central para-military forces which work under the command of the state governments, intelligence agencies, modernisation of police forces, sharing of intelligence and inter-state coordination.

He also ruled out the government launching a special commando operation to uproot naxalism as Law and Order was a state subject and the states had raised their own specialised forces for the operations.
