Mayawati's fake profile: UP mulls mechanism to check cyber crimes
Lucknow, Aug 29 (UNI) As a fresh initiative, the Uttar Pradesh government is mulling a mechanism to keep a check on the cyber crimes taking place on a regular basis, the derogatory profile of Chief Minister Mayawati posted on 'Orkut' being the latest incident.
The state government has been in the process of establishing a cyber-cell in police since long, but the recent incident involving the Chief Minister has expedited the move, according to a senior Home Department official.
Meanwhile, Orkut, a Google owned site, has removed the mischeivous and fake profile of Ms Mayawati even though the Special Task Force(STF) of the Uttar Pradesh police is already investigating the matter.
A Google spokesperson said in a statement that the fake profiles of Chief Minister Mayawati violated Orkut's policy on impersonation and have been removed. ''We take violations of Orkut's policy very seriously as such activities diminish the experience of our users.
When we learn about illegal or inappropriate content we act quickly to remove it,'' the statement said.
Earlier Home Secretary Javeed Ahmed said the government had taken the matter seriously and strict action would be taken against the offenders. ''The way and means are being evolved to bring social networking sites under the law to avoid such malacious descriptions,'' he said.
