Landslides in Nagaland claim a life; Punjab, Haryana remain dry

New Delhi, Aug 29 (UNI) Landslides triggered by heavy to medium downpour since the past one week at Phesema area of Nagaland claimed a life while roads in Dimapur and Kohima and in the Mao Gate area at Manipur were damaged.

Nagaland reports said a minor girl was buried alive in a landslide at Phesama area below National Highway 39 at Police Reserve area here yesterday.

The monsoon turned weak in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh Union Territory leading to a dry spell at most places in the region while certain areas in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, including Kullu district, received light to moderate showers overnight.

Chandigarh went without rains for the third day today and the maximum humidity level in the city touched 89 per cent while the minimum was 70 per cent.

Light showers lashed various parts of Himachal Pradesh during the last 24 hours and Solan town was the wettest place in the state, recording 26 mm rainfall.

Shimla recieved light showers and dense fog coverd the town while Kinnaur, Lahul Spiti, Chamba and Kullu remained dry.

The Met Department has predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and in Haryana and Punjab during the next 24 hours.

The capital remained pleasant even as the mercury showed a slight rise in temperature. The maximum temperature rose to 35.2 degrees- one degree above normal while the minimum was recorded at 26.7 degrees.

People in Uttar Pradesh heaved a sigh of relief as rains lashed eastern and central areas including the state capital city in the last 24 hours. Several places in Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Meerut, Faizabad, Bareilly, Moradabad and Kanpur divisions received rainfall, the Met Department said.

However, scorching heat and extreme humid conditions in Patna forced people to remain indoors as sweltering heat continued. The maximum temperature was recorded at 33 degrees Celsius while maximum humidity was 89 per cent.

Chennai and its suburbs experienced intermittent rains since this morning and several low-lying areas were inundated. Fishermen were warned against strong off-shore winds from the south-westerly direction with speeds reaching upto 45 to 55 kmph along south Tamil Nadu coast in the next 24 hours.

Heavy to very heavy rains are likely to occur at most places in Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, coastal Karnataka and Kerala, while heavy rains are likely in Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, west Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Marathwada, interior Karnataka, and Lakshadweep.

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Sikkim, Orissa, Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, and isolated places in Jharkhand, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir are likely to receive rainfall.

Rain or thundershowers have occurred at most places in west Madhya Pradesh, Konkan, Goa, Marathwada, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalseema, coastal Karnataka, and Lakshadweep.

West Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, and a few places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh received rainfall.

Thundershowers have occurred at isolated places in Orissa, Jammu and Kashmir and interior Karnataka.
