Jaipur, Aug 29 (UNI) Thousands of Gujjars from all over the country congregated at Abhaneri in Dausa district for a mahapanchayat today to plan their future course of action when the deadline for the committee to look into their demand for ST status ends on September 12.

Gujjar leader Atar Singh Bhadana, who was suspended from the BJP, told UNI that the Gujjars would wait patiently till September 12 for the committee report, which is looking into their demands for inclusion in the ST category. They will hold another mahapanchayat on September 13 in Dholpur to decide on a further strategy.

All important leaders including Colonel Kirori Singh Bainsla, Dr Roop Singh and expelled BJP MLA Prahlad Gunjal were present today.

Eyewitnesses said at least one lakh Gujjars congregated at Abhaneri from adjoining Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, Bharatpur and other districts and states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

The last mahapanchayat, held on August 26 in Jhalarapatan, chief Minister Vasundhara Raje's constituency, witnessed some unruly scenes on the dais as leaders of different groups vied for attention and attempted to speak first, sending out signals of discontent between the leaders.

This mahapanchayat promises to be an apparent show of strength and unity among different Gujjar leaders, barring differences of opinion as all are fighting for ST status for their community.

The administration ensured strict security to prevent any untoward incident and imposed prohibitory orders in the districts.

There was heavy police deployement in the districts also.
