BoA to take up TCS, Cognizant's SEZs proposals tomorrow

New Delhi, Aug 29 (UNI) Of the 31 applications to be taken up by the Board of Approval (BoA) of Commerce and Industry Ministry for setting up special econonmic zones (SEZs) in the country tomorrow, as many as 14 proposals relate to IT/ITeS, including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Cognizant Technology.

Of the 14 proposed SEZs in IT/ITeS, five are in Haryana and four in Andhra Pradesh. One each is to be located in Karnataka, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab.

Both TCS and Cognizant require land for setting up the SEZs in Andhra Pradesh where the state industrial infrastrcuture corporation is also putting up two SEZs in IT/ITeS and has acquired land for the purpose.

The lone IT/ITeS in Punjab is being put up at Mohali, the fast-emerging IT town adjoining Chandigarh. Sukhm Infrastructures has acquired 11.62 hectares of land for it. Similarly, Pune in Maharasthra, which like Mohali, has also emerged on IT radar, has attracted Gera Developers who propose to set up the SEZ on over ten hectares of land they have acquired.

In West Bengal also, a property developer would be setting up the SEZ at 24 Pargana district, MP's SEZ in IT sector will come up in Indore where ivestor MAN Industries have only acquired part of the 119.6 hectares land on which they propose to estabish the project. A realtor has proposed to develop the IT SEZ in Bangalore North where it has acquired 12 hectares of land for the purpose.

The BoA will also take up proposal for conversion of in-priciple given to Sterling Erections and Infrastructure Pvt Ltd which want to set up a multi-product SEZ on 3,380 hectares of land in Bharuch district of Gujarat. The company has acquired the land.

The Centre has, however, capped SEZ area to 2,500 hectares.

Another major proposal to be taken by the Board is that of Gitanjali Gems which also want to set up at multi-product SEZ in Nagpur on 1,000 hectares of land. The company has also put up an application for establishing gems and jewellary SEZ on 102 hectares of land it has acquired in Aurangabad.

The BoA, in June, had deferred both proposals of the company.

Other important proposals which are listed for BoA's consideration are by Gujarat Finance City Development Company which seeks to set up at multi-services SEZ on 100 hectares of land in Gandhinagar district and Gujarat Hydrocarbon and Energy SEZ Ltd which wants to establish sector-specific SEZ for providing products and related services for oil and gas, energy and petrochemical sector.

Sylvan Infrastructure's proposal to set up an Engineering SEZ on 200 hectares of land in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal will also come up for consideration before the Board, though the company has not yet acquired land for the project. Similarly, Welspun Anjar SEZ Ltd's proposal for setting up an SEZ for engineering products in Kutch district of Gujarat on 121 hectares of land will also be taken up by BoA, though in this case, too, the company has not the land in its possession.

The government has so far given 366 formal approvals and 178 in-principle approvals for setting up SEZs in the country.
