Nepal releases 2,15,100 cusecs water in river Gandak

Patna, Aug 28 (UNI) Nepal today released 2,15,100 cusecs water in river Gandak from Balmikinagar barrage following which the flood situation became grim in some areas of North Bihar including West Champaran district.

The flood water was already playing havoc in Samastipur, Begusarai and Muzaffarpur districts as they were inundated following breach in embankments of the rivers flowing from there.

Sources from the Central Water Commission here said all major rivers of North Bihar were flowing above the danger level.

A report from Bagha in West Champaran district said following heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of river Gandak,the water was released from Nepal.The report said the administration was working on war footing to prevent erosion from the river.

District Magistrate Mihir Kumar Singh had ordered all Block Development Officers and other officials to camp at their places in view of the flood situation.

A similar report from Samastipur said several villages of Sarairanjan and Morwa blocks were inundated as the water was continuously flowing from the Noon river which breached its embankments at four separate places.About 75 villages of 25 panchayats were marooned and the district administration had taken up the relief work on war footing.The flood water had also snapped road links of the villages with the district headquarter.

The water level of Bagmati, Kareh and Kosi increased following last nights heavy down pour and the water was flowing from the breached embankments at Mankauli, Shankarpur,Mahadeva and Parsa villages.

A report from Muzaffarpur district revealed that the flood situation in Saraia, Aurai and Katara blocks remained grim.

The water of rivers Bagmati and Lakhandei rivers were creating pressure on the embankments.

The flood situation in Begusarai district further deteriorated as the water level of the rivers flowing there was rising.
