Bangalore, Aug 28 (UNI) Karnataka Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice S R Naik today advocated setting up of a dependable system of international security and peace to protect human rights and the right to live.

Inaugurating a two-day workshop on 'Emerging Media Challenges Amid Proliferation of Conflict-Internal and International', organised by the Press Institute of India and International Committee of the Red Cross here, he said nations and individuals were very much concerned about human rights issues and the consequences arising out of its violation.

In the last six decades, human rights have become a live and vibrant issue at least in the free and democratic world, and if there was a single ideology widely accepted around the world today, it was the concept of human rights, he added.

Mr Justice Naik said ''the media should play the role of a social scientist, critic and evaluator of plans and schemes by provoking ideas and thoughts to help the poor, marginalised and weaker sections of the society have access to justice.'' The fourth estate should also play a critical role in upholding the rule of law and resisting attempts to degrade democracy and free society, he added.
