Tiruchirapalli, Aug 28 (UNI) The Railway Board has sanctioned a Rs 75 crore modernisation programme of the Golden Rock Railway workshop here, Workshop Chief Works Manager S Rangarajan said today.

Talking to reporters here, he said the proposed modernisation programme would enable the workshop to step up its wagon production from the existing 600 units to 1,000 per year. The periodical overhauling capacity of diesel locomotives would also go up from 120 to 140. Besides, a new technology-cum-training centre would be set up, he added.

Mr Rangarajan said that under the programme, a Rs 30 crore engineering block for machining would also be erected.

He, however, said the proposed modernisation works could be taken up only after three to four years as several formalities needed to be cleared.

To a question, he said tenders have been floated for the Rs 17 crore new engineering workshop, meeting the requirements of periodical overhauling of high horsepower locomotives of 4,000 HP and above. The project would be completed within two years of its commencement.
